AUSTRALIAN OPEN: The old guard aren’t done, the new generation must step up

February 22, 2021by Samuel Salimon

Novak Djokovic maintained his dominance in the Australian Open as he defeated Daniil Medvedev to set a new record of nine wins in the nine Australian Open finals he featured in.

The number one seed Djokovic won the final in three straight sets, 7-5 6-2 6-2, to take his Grand Slam wins to a total of 18. He is now two Grand Slams behind Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, both of whom are on 20. The Serbian has never lost a final at the Australian Open, and he further confirmed that was his turf. On the other hand, Medvedev has now lost the two Grand Slam finals he has featured in – one to Rafa Nadal and now to Novak.

Before the final match, Medvedev had insisted that all the pressure was on Djokovic, giving his pursuance of 20 Grand Slams to match Roger Federer and Rafa’s records. However, during the match, Medvedev, who visibly felt the pressure shouted at his team, threw racquets, and exuded poor body language in general. Djokovic had warned that the old guard knew what pressure was as they have handled it their whole life. He accepted the pressure, but he looked steely throughout the match without showing nerves.

Before the final, speaking to Eurosport, he said, “the younger generation still has a lot of work to do”. Reminding them that the old guards will not stand and hand it over to them. These comments show the level of mentality and confidence in the top guys. The new generation has flattered to deceive on many occasions and must now step it up if they want to dominate.
