Manchester City started the season poorly.
Many fans and football pundits thought Pep had made a mistake signing an extension with the Citizens.
Twenty-three matches into the season and the Blue side of Manchester is ten points ahead of second-placed Manchester United at the top of the table.
How Manchester City has reached the top of the table is nothing short of phenomenal. On a winning streak dating back to seventeen matches, the Citizens have scored goals and looked more reliable than ever defensively.
The arrival of Ruben Dias and John Stones’ reinvention has helped Manchester City form a solid backline that is propelling them to the title. In particular, John Stones looks like the player City got over £47 million for from Everton. He had the highest passing accuracy in the league, and his passing has helped the team build well from the back.
The team is averaging more possession than ever, and they are starving opponents off the ball. The team’s refreshing thing is how they have learned to sit back and abandon the high press when needed. This has been an issue for Pep’s team in the past. Many teams find a way to beat the press, and they were left exposed. This season has seen that weakness worked upon.
For a team that has played without a striker, they are scoring enough goals for the most part. Ikay Gundogan is already on double numbers for goals this season. The recent recovery of Sergio Aguero from injury only means more firepower for the team.
With the ammunition of players and City’s defensive solidity, it will be hard to stop them from winning the title this season.
