Medvedev made it into the Australian Open final after triumphing over Stefanos Tsitsipas in straight sets in the semi-final. He will now face 17-time Grand slam winner Novak Djokovic in the final.
He turned up the heat on Novak Djokovic after the win, claiming that the Serbian has more at stake than him. Medvedev, who has defeated Novak thrice in five meetings, believes closing the gap on Rafa and Roger will get to the Serbian.
However, going into the final – does Medvedev really has nothing to lose?
Medvedev is seen as one of the heirs to the throne of the “big three” – Roger, Rafa and Djokovic. This will be his second grand slam final after a 2019 loss to Rafael Nadal in the US Open final. He has been on a good run of form lately, and he will be looking to make the most of it in the Australian Open final.
For a player that has defeated Djokovic three times in the past, expectations will be high for a possible upset. Tennis fans, especially Roger and Rafa fans, will be counting on him to stop Djokovic from getting closer to the duo for several grand slams won.
Medvedev’s win will also see him stake a significant claim on being the true heir to the big three. A win will see him rise above the likes of Tsitsipas and Thiem in fans’ eyes as the next biggest thing in Tennis.
With all of these in mind, and the possibility of being the first tennis player to defeat Djokovic in an Australian Open final.
Will Medvedev truly feel no pressure like he said?
